Cover Time!

Tabby Monkhouse
Cover

One: PowerPoint Cover

All of the ideas below are aiming to be Professional and Sophisticated. I have decided to design a cover on Power point and Publisher, so that I can get a wide range of designs and to also see what is easier to use when making the cover.

The picture below shows the cover that I was thinking of using for my magazine. I used power point for this one as it is easier to use shapes and colour scheme.

To make this cover I used the logo of the college at as a background to the banner of the magazine.

I used a serif font as I think it brings class and sophistication to the cover.

The colour scheme is Blue, Grey and White and I intend to use this colour scheme through out the magazine.

The picture of the college student in the middle will show that it is relevant towards the reader.

I also added the 'New To College?' on the cover so that it will assure the reader is the audience

I also made it so that the picture is behind the title.

Two: Publisher Cover

The picture below shows the cover that I was thinking of using for my magazine. I used Publisher for this one as it is easier to mover text boxes and pictures anywhere you like.

I made it so that the picture of the student is in front of the title of the magazine, but underneath the other part of the magazine.

I used a sans-serif font this time to compare the two computerised covers.

I used a lot less grey in this cover so it would look more enticing as it looks a lot brighter according to the reader.

I added a 'New To College?' on this magazine so that the reader can see that it is aimed at them and it draws them in to look at the magazine.

I added 'The magazine will contain' as it will allow the reader to get a chance to see what to expect.

Student Magazine Research

Student Magazine Research

One: Seventeen Magazine

I chose 17 Magazine as its target audience is towards teenagers who will be students in school or college.

17 Magazine Cover
The cover of this magazine has bright colours on it such as pink and yellow, this shows that the audience is mainly aimed at girls. For example the masthead 'Seventeen' is pink, in italics and in serif font. The layout of the cover is very hectic in that a lot of headings are eye catching by using different colours and font sizes.

In semiotic terms, the sign could be the girl on the cover, the denotation of her would be that she is young and feminine. The picture also seems to be taken out side with blue skies in a meadow. The connotation would be that health, happiness, the season of summer. Finally, the anchorage, for this magazine, could be any of the other headings used on the front cover. For example, it could be 'Fall Clothes Under $20!' or 'Awesome Hair' or 'Get Clear Skin' This could be using a combination of anchorage by trying to attract readers.

Two: Platform Magazine

I chose the Platform Magazine as it is a different approach to Seventeen Magazine in that it is not single gender.

Platform Cover
The cover of this magazine has coordinating colours that appear to be like school colours. This means that the colour scheme is then continued throughout the magazine. The cover of the magazine is also very simple as it is the title and a logo showing, this means that the font size has to be very big in order to fill the cover. This cover is interesting to me in that the masthead that consists of the title 'Platform' has a triangle where the 'A' is supposed to be. I found that interesting in that it makes it more creative and interesting according to the reader. The font through out the masthead and headings are sans-serif

In semiotic terms, the sign could be the animal on the cover that appears to be a wolf. The denotation of the wolf would be, a drawing that is transparent, the same colour as the white background. Finally, the connotation could be, strong, domination, bravery.

Three: Cosmo on Campus

I chose this magazine as it was a magazine (Cosmopolitan) that had, had an idea to make another magazine specifically towards students, which I found interesting in a Media sense as well as a Business sense as well.

Cosmo on Campus Cover
The cover of this magazine is also more aimed at women. I think this  because the masthead has a colour scheme of pink and black. However the black could symbolize the sense of diversity in that both men and woman would by this magazine. Another reason why i think that it is more feminine is the woman on the front. The woman is wearing a pink dress that you would wear to go in, which could also symbolize freshers parties. The font on the cover is a mix between serif and sans-serif which also has a link with the diversity on men and woman. The font is also all in capitals which could represent the demand to buy products the magazine is trying to sell to the reader.

In semiotic terms, the could be the girl on the cover. The denotation could be she is wearing a pink dress in front of a white screen. The connotation would be that she is happy, confident, sexy.
